Infrastructure Wrap Up

John’s Perspective:

Upgrading the sewer was less involved than the water lines, but we definitely wanted to get it right. Since drain lines work by gravity, the correct slope is critical to the system functioning properly. The slope should decrease ¼” in rise per 1 foot of run. The trench needed to be smooth with no bumps or dips, and the pipe fitting installed such that it did not create any turbulence in flow. Our situation was complicated because there was an 8’ drop in the terrain elevation in the location of this run. A 3’ by 18” trench was dug with a Ditch Witch. Sections of 20’ Schedule 40 PVC were glued together to make up the 500’ length needed. Using precision laser equipment, readings are taken every 6” and dirt added or taken away as necessary.

We installed a sewer run long enough to serve this first pod and the next two subsequent pods (a total of 9 homes). The site for each home that we feed into the line had to be pre planned. Cleanouts were added for each home and at least every 75’. The trench was filled, and the sewer was now ready for the homes. This was a time consuming process. It took two very experienced men a full day complete the job.

Georgia power took full responsibility for moving the electrical lines. We watched as they dug the appropriate ditches, installed new underground wiring, and hooked up the relocated meter boxes. They worked efficiently and the whole process took only a few hours. We hired an electrician to run power from the meter box to the fuse box in the homes.

The footings were poured, the utilities installed. Everything was ready for the homes to arrive.
