Winning community support

Hi, I’m John. Daphne usually writes these blog entries, but we thought it is time that I step in and provide a different prospective.

Over the past few months, we’ve physically and culturally improved Madison Woods. Our challenge now is to change the community’s perception. In the past, Madison Woods was in the local paper regularly. Unfortunately, none of it was flattering. We needed to bring favorable attention to Madison Woods.

We approached the pastor of one of the most influential churches with a plan to donate a house. We wanted the church to select a deserving family to receive one of our freshly rehabbed homes as a Christmas gift. The key was presented to the worthy recipient during Christmas day service. The event made the front page of the local newspaper.

We started a campaign to get community leaders and local officials on our side. We joined the chamber of commerce. We regularly attend city council and county board meetings. Churches are very influential here, and we attend different Sunday services on a regular basis.

Everywhere we went we tried to deliver the message: “help us make the city of Madison and Morgan County a better community by making Madison Woods a great work force housing community.” One by one, they came aboard our project. They all wanted to help. We told them our problems and our challenges, and it is paying off.

One of our problems was past due ad valorem taxes. Previous owners had been lax in paying taxes on park owned homes. Many resident owned homes were sold with very little paper work, and also had unpaid taxes. Serial numbers on the homes did not match up with what was on the tax role. This tax mess simmered until we came in and cleaned up the park. We were expected to pay all of the back taxes on park owned homes. As part of our “get on board” strategy, we invited officials to come out for a visit. We showed them the work underway and what we hoped to accomplish in the near future. We shared our vision of what we wanted Madison Woods to be. We explained our problems. The local officials took on the cause, and a plan was put together to get this problem resolved.

Getting community leaders and local officials on board is a critical piece towards our goal of changing the perception of Madison Woods.

Rather than attending many churches Sunday services as you state, to promote your trailer park, I would suggest that you faithfully attend only 1 church and only to worship the Lord. Your statement is offensive to me.

John and Daphne, you 'guys' rock! Don't let this one naysayer get you down...obviously, some religious freak and not a savy investor! Remember, money is NOT the root of all evil, but rather the LOVE of/for money is....

You two are doing the right thing, helping those on the lowest playing field level...

You have the right to go to many churches or temples etc. as you like. This is America!

As long as folks are not breaking any law or being disrespect to others.
